Shubha and Sukumaran are indeed brave to take up this role . Even today ( 4 decades later ) by conventional standards it's daring .

Her role has some negative shades . She is the keep of a very rich man without regrets . She meets newly married Sukumaran and his spouse . As both families get close since they are neighbours , she reveals her status slowly . Sukumaran's partner is initially shocked but tries to understand her instead of judging her harshly . Shubha is unapologetic about her status in society . As she is comfortable and rich thanx to his favours Her faithful maid Sukumari never leaves her side and always supports her .

She gets a job in her patron's office to Sukumaran . Slowly both get drawn to each other . Sukumaran meanwhile starts a short affair with another female employee behind her back . When she gets wind of this , sensing competition , Shubha gets her transferred over night . Heart broken, she leaves quietly . His frilly nature is shown . Sukumaran and Shubha come closer . Very soon she realises that she is carrying his child . Her patron comes to know and tries to talk her out of this decision . A humane side of his comes out .

Meanwhile we come to know that Sukumaran had eloped with his partner and they have still not registered this marriage . Her sister comes to mend fences . After an angry war of words, Sukumaran says they are free birds they can fly with any one they like . Though shocked , she refuses to leave his side . Sukumaran and Shubha decide to start life afresh together since both are tired of their partners . His live in partner comes to know about his affair with Shubha . Stunned, enraged , hurt and frustrated she does not know how to react . The final confrontation is between a jealous Shubha and her . A lot of running around , chasing and gun games happen . Shubha dies with her patron , Sukumaran and his wife watching helplessly . She slips from a cliff . The story comes to an end. Sukumaran is reunited with his partner . He now understands the value of stability . Shubha is shown as a middle aged mature woman who is unrepentant of her decisions . Sukumaran for a major part has a half scowl and half confused frown showing his flirty frilly indecisive state . A bold formula even today .
