The grand opening gala for EURO DISNEYLAND, as it was still called in its early years, was also broadcast in a special German-language version on the German television channel ARD. Thomas Gottschalk, well-known for his role as host of WETTEN, DASS... and numerous film comedies, hosted the show. Singer Peter Maffay was also invited to perform as a special guest for the German-speaking world.

The construction costs for the theme park in Marne-la-Vallée amounted to more than USD 14 billion. In its early years, the park and its associated hotels were surprisingly unsuccessful, as they were simply far too expensive by European standards at the time. This only changed when the park was renamed DISNEYLAND PARIS. In any case, the opening was something very special, one that was followed with great amazement.
