Discovering the world and ways of adults is a strange event for a kid, and little and innocent Wilgus Collier (William Johnson) will find it the most peculiar way. In a small Southern town, life seems okay for a kid who loves his mom and dad, enjoying the easiness of a place where nothing dangerous happens. A ride home with a total stranger doesn't seem to offer any risk and the man driving the old truck looks friendly. The man is Fat Monroe (Ned Beatty) and in between some strange antics that goes from humored to creepy exchanges, the man keeps revealing some nasty things about the boy's father. He doesn't buy any of the man's stories (-"I didn't call you a liar, but you're making up this stuff"), defending his family in the best way he can, but the old man sounds somewhat reliable.

The story written by Gurney Norman intrigues audiences as we're not sure in who to believe or what to believe. We only know the kid from a brief moment watching a movie in a theatre; Fat Monroe comes out of nowhere and slowly reveals that he knows the boy's family, and previous to that was all a series of jokes as he keeps calling the boy by a wrong name in between some weird talks and behavior (he offers a cigar to Wilgus). The key idea is to shatter some illusion about what one adult says to a kid and how what's said with some power of authority and intention can transform a kid's view of the world. Simply saying, sarcasm doesn't sit well with children, everything is taken at face value even when they know the truth about the world around them, in Wilgus' case he knows his family and all that the man says about his troubled parents aren't real. But the doubt enters his conscience, and what a twisted way to grow up.

The film goes in two parts, and must say it was quite an unusual format to see a short story that gets a second part with an interview with the author exposing some information about his life and ideas about his short story. The film serves as a great highlight to a well-known character actor that gets a great choice to be a very effective and memorable leading man. Ned Beatty was phenomenal with this sort of bipolar character. He's toying with the kid's emotions and with the public cause you never know what he's gonna do next. He can make you laugh, feel terrified or weirded out, and it all feels effortless. You be the judge if he's a villain, or some sort of life's hardest teacher that proves some bad deeds can work for a good cause. 9/10.
