Ken Burns once described the research he does on a film to making syrup. He lives in New Hampshire, and says when people make syrup there they have to collect 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup. He said that good editing is the key to making a quality documentary-taking hours of interviews, first-person accounts, music, stories, and, of course, pictures, and "whittling" them down to produce something you can be proud to be remembered for.
