An unemployed artisan who used to live on his wife's and son's earnings finally gets a job, but his hopes are shattered when his crafting tools are stolen by his enemy. So he and his son searched everywhere in the city for stolen tools in order to regain his job. Nirupa Roy as Parvati was brilliant and elegant. Her innocent screen presence elevated the screenplay. Ashok Kumar as Shankar Mohite was naturally acting but overshadowed by Nirupa in the first half. But he improved himself in the second half. Both Ashok and Nirupa shared an incredible chemistry with each other. Lalita Pawar as Ganga was exceptional. Her portrayal was villainous and humorous at the same time. Om Prakash as Girdhari was kinda sidelined though he acted well. Apart from them, Ratan Kumar, Madhukar Apte, Minoo Mumtaz and Gajanan Jagirdar contributed well to the film. The film has a fitting pace which doesn't bring boredom to the viewers. Vasant Joglekar could effectively build the tension and emotions within the unemployed poor men in rural India and society's ultimate reaction of a man living on a woman's earnings. The action sequences were well handled, and the director mocks religious superstitions in the beginning, but later even when the protagonist gets the job with his hard work, the director links it as a clear result of religious superstitions. The plot was extremely engaging and beyond my expectations. It was kinda oversentimental at first, but when the conflict arose it was enjoyable to watch. The dialogues were natural and realistic and so were the characters. The character development of Shankar, from a short-tempered person to a soft-hearted person was notable. The ending was predictable though a satisfying climax. The editing could have been better, the slow transitions between each scene kinda distract the audience. The production design of Shankar's Mahallah was accurate. The choreography was expressive, and the action sequences were causing great tension. The music by C. Ramchandra goes well with the plot but is lackluster. None of the songs are either noticeable or enjoyable. The film deeply talks about themes like poverty in rural India, societal divisions, norms, and religious superstitions within Hindu society and how much struggle a poor man has to face in order to overcome all of these obstacles. In summary, 'Karigar' is a social drama film that deals with societal norms within poor people. It is highly recommended to those who love social films.
