Porn pioneer Bob Chinn corrects the balance which has most early porn documentaries (and white coaters) tilted towards boring educational content. He packs as much hardcore sex into THE HISTORY OF PORNOGRAPHY plus some informative narration for those who care.

Best material is nearly complete unspooling of classic stag films, including "El Satario" (over 100 years old now) and the very well-made "The Nun", featuring an attractive stand-in for a '40s Hollywood star.

Reporting how mini-cinemas started the craze of showing split-beaver loops in 1968 after an important Supreme Court ruling that depictions of nudity were not obscene per se, Chinn shows arousing examples of the form, and later has modern soundie stag loops for the fans.

The explicit magazines from Denmark and nostalgic "comic booklets" dating from the '20s to the '50s are recalled, so the film does have some historical basis. But essentially it's porn, not a reference work.

Fans of Suzanne Fields should be warned that she appears for only a second or two, holding a big black dildo.
