Progenitor of Taiwan's "Black Movies" wave of (ostensibly) social realist sex and violence pictures, NEVER TOO LATE TO REPENT, like most firsts, looks positively sedate in retrospect - or at least when compared to the lady ninja rape-revenge epics the genre would spawn a mere 3-4 years down the line. Nevertheless, it's still a lot of fun - a rollicking, sex-and-violence romp through the Taipei underworld that even manages to function seriously as the sort of proscriptive morality play it purports to be.

The simple plot follows ex-con Ma Sha - playing himself - in the supposed true story of his life. Starting out abandoned by his father and mother, he's raised by his grandma and quickly falls in with a local brothel. By the time he's 18, he's already landed in prison and lost a finger in a brawl with a customer, and a few years later, he and a group of other cons decide to break out.

After a while on the lam, Sha ends up recaptured after he decides to track down his father, who, despite being delighted to see him, is none too thrilled at the prospect of having a wanted criminal for a son. Thrown into the high-security prison on Orchid Island, Sha is finally led to the path of reform after an encounter with an old school chum, now one of the officers there. Finally earning his release for real, Sha nevertheless discovers his checkered past - not to mention full-torso dragon tattoo - make him a tough subject for employment, a challenge that only makes it harder to stick to the straight and narrow.

Like a lot of social realist films, REPENT is less a fully formed narrative than a didactic chronicle. The moral, advertised even more bluntly in the literal Chinese title, THE FIRST ERROR STEP, is that one wrong move can derail the course of an entire life, a thesis which REPENT commits to proving at the expense of any sort of B-story or expanded character development. In that regard, it definitely is a realist or social problem film not dissimilar to American exploitation pictures going back to the teens and 20s, though probably best popularized in the likes of '50s JD movies. Of course, like those films, it takes time out for extensive detours into the dark side before the moralizing starts, and the film features some surprising flashes of nudity (apparently quite risqué in Taiwan at the time) along with bloody murders, finger-loppings, jailhouse fisticuffs, etc. Despite all this sordidness, the film also does a fine job evincing sympathy for its protagonist - ably played by the handsome, expressive Ma - and so rather surprisingly manages to deliver on the genre's usual questionable promise of proscriptive moralism. It doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel, but it's juicy popcorn entertainment, and a shame it's not more widely available, especially in the West.

In Mainland China, this takes the form of allegory and large-scale epics that reflect on national history. Taiwan emphasizes intimate modernist realism, generational change, and the search for identity. Singapore contributes stories of migration, multiculturalism, and the negotiation of tradition in a globalized city.

Crime stories often revolve around the planning, execution, and consequences of criminal acts, as well as the efforts to solve and prevent such acts. They explore various aspects of criminal behavior, motives, and the moral dilemmas faced by both perpetrators and those seeking to uphold the law.
