Sensitive and erotic early XXXer from DeSimone

This early XXX flick from Tom DeSimone succeeds where so many others fail by taking stock of its limitations, striving consciously to work within them, and letting a simple though effective story and able cast handle the rest.

In contrast to a lot of other early XXX time-wasters, BUST starts off with a slow but effective situation of its story and characters. Recalling the folkloric narration that begins Ray Dennis Steckler's pitiful THE CHOOPER / BLOOD SHACK from a mere year later, the film lays out its central legend of a feral man-child, the progeny of a group of since-deceased settlers, forced to fend for himself in the wilderness. Having gone years without human contact, the mute young man's life is shaken up by the arrival of two outcast Native Americans, rejected by their tribe because of their homosexuality (a plot point that breaks with many native cultures' more open attitudes toward sexuality and gender fluidity, but just go with it...).

With the film's meager cast of three thus established, it leaves itself the time and space to allow its sex scenes to emerge organically from the inevitable love triangle it establishes. The actors are all handsome enough and quite game, and while not necessarily encounters for the history books, each of the film's sex scenes generates a good deal of heat and comes off with a fair amount of style thanks to DeSimone's proficient direction. While things eventually turn tragic (as most love triangles do), the film's empathy for its characters and their outsider status leaves it a haunting and sweet-natured artifact of newfound gay liberation. 

Providing a good lesson even this early in the XXX game on how to make the best of limited resources, DUST UNTO DUST is a solid early effort from DeSimone, and amply shows why he went on to become one of the better directors from gay porn's golden age. Still well worth a watch today, and not merely for historic interest, DUST is well worth a look, for those so inclined.
