A great humored view about a city and its history

A captivating and very humored short that chronicles in a brief manner the history of the city of Santos, its evolution and importance in many great areas of society. It's a very complimentary project despite the jokes and funny moments. It certainly honored the great city during the celebration of its 450th Anniversary

The coastal city has the largest port of Brazil, responsible for all the major shipments of products and goods in the country; a famous soccer team named after the city and known for revealing player Pelé (3 time winner of FIFA's World Cup) and many other historical facts.

The story of Santos is presented through a series of small chapters narrated by José Rubens Chachá and with several characters played by Santos born actor Ney Latorraca. Always a magnificent performer, Ney appears as a photographer whose wife is expecting their first child, to be named after a historical figure of Santos, and then we are taken back to the city's foundation (where he plays a Portuguese conqueror). Other characters he play are more controversial figures like the slave owner that was opposed to slavery abolishment - but that one comes with a hilarious moment when they were freed - and a specialist in torture during the military regime. This last bit is played out as a darkly humored moment and it's insane how the filmmakers got away with it.

André Klotzel greatly blends facts and fiction in a very effective and delightful manner. The narration presents the historical facts and places, then it's up to Latorraca's different characters break the fourth wall and address to us some outrageous view from whatever character he's playing. Another distinctive device used by Mr. Klotzel comes with the use of imagination, as he travels back to past times the story is filmed through the perspective of old cameras filming newsreels and short documentaries, as if such cameras existed in 1400's, late 1800's and a more modern piece to cover the early 1900's. Those anachronic devices were amazingly used and fun to watch. And one gets to learn a lot about the history of Santos and how it moved in a progressive way if compared to other major cities in Brazil. 9/10.
