Should have been Erik Løchens third movie

Knut Formo's Last Hunt ("Knut Formos siste jakt" in Norwegian) is written by by renown Norwegian film maker Erik Løchen, who made "The Hunt" (1958) concidered to be a Norwegian classic, once voted to be the best Norwegian film ever. Løchen was supposed to direct it himself, as only his third feature, and started the work, but due to bad health he had to hand the work over to his close friend, direction Jan Erik Düring. This then in stead became Dürings third directoral feature.

The story is based on a 200 year old legend about a 23 year old man from the Gudbrandsdal valley, who went scouring a mountain plateu in Jotunheimen pursuit of a white reindeer buck for five days. Time after time he gets the buck on shooting hold, but misses every time. During the struggle he feel the forces of nature. Among them the meeting of the saga creature hulder a young woman louring him in, promising him a victorious hunt - if he offers his own body to her.

The fim introduces Knut Husebø in the main role, and we also meet Anne Marie Ottersen and Kaje Medbøe, and we also meet Espen Schønberg and Ola Isene in roles here, but the main actor in this, is the nature itself, photographed by Knut Gløersen.

The movie reveived decent critics back then. It's an delightful and well played story filmed in 2.37:1, in Panavision with Eastmancolor.

The dialect used may feel awkward to some Norwegians, as it did to me, but is supposed to be the local Gudbrandsdal dialect.

Interesting trivia might be that "Formo" was Erik Løchen's mothers maiden last name, and that he is the grandfather of renown Norwegian film maker Joachim Trier.

This movie is made available in 2025 when it was released on interregional (region-free) Blu-Ray Disk by Norwegian Film Classics as the 81st release in a new series with classics, NFK0081, with subtitles in English, and is supposed to be held in stock for film lovers. The film is also a part of "The Norwegian Film Heritage" series from Norwegian Film Distribution.
