When the Baron's valet, Hans Suursööt, takes some bread and wine to give to his ailing father, the Baron discovers it, and has him whipped. Suursööt responds by stealing the Baron's best horse and going on a rampage of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, with lots of clever tricks in terorizing and escaping from the Baron.

I suppose most countries have a Robin Hood legend or two. This is based on an actual Estonian fellow,. Juri Rumm was born in 1856, was a real fellow, although not quite as successful as the fictionalized version. He was captured at the age of 23 and sent to Siberia. Although a rumor he had escaped started a panic among Estonian gentry, he went to Siberia.

This romanticized version -- probably the first Estonian film I have seen) shows the typical techniques of late silent film, with lots of fast cutting, a floating camera, Dutch angles and oddly, many irised shots. Although the copy lacks the fourth reel, the rest of it is in terrific shape with the outdoor shots quite lovely.
