Doubling down on all the crazy antics of the original, Return of Bastard Swordsman delivers a fever dream of psychedelic imagery and martial arts madness, albeit at the expense of a plot that is nigh impossible to follow. Picking up shortly from where its predecessor left off, the fanciful supernatural surrealism returns in full force with all the madness present from the get-go, with returning director Tony Lou Chun-Ku relentlessly hurling sight gags, palm lasers and chest death rays at the screen with every opportunity. It very much straddles that fine line of the ludicrous, occasionally striding boldly across, though often to a less-than-stellar result, but the film does at least retain the superb choreography and chaotic action; it's all akin to a fever dream stitched together with silk, magic, and martial arts bravado. All that being said, this is still a very well-directed film; the camera is almost always moving with plenty of inventive set pieces, rapid-fire editing and colourful photography, with a kind of anything-goes creativity that's hard not to admire. Unfortunately, Norman Chu's titular swordsman is absent for the bulk of his own film, spending a large chunk offscreen or injured, although he thankfully manages to take centre stage for a rather spectacular finale. This leaves most of the film shouldered by an array of new supporting characters, some of whom are abruptly bumped off just as we were getting to know them, especially as the acting is, on the whole, fine, though Chen Kuan-Tai really earns that paycheck as the villain. While not as gloriously loony as you want it to be, Return of Bastard Swordsman is messy yet magical, not quite scaling the dizzying heights of its predecessor but, on its own terms, still a pretty wild tale, essentially delivering more of the same you love but with an equal amount of things you really didn't ask for.
