Three Pacific adventurers, completely broke, abandoned, and lost in Tahiti, survive only thanks to their relationships with the local women. One of them, a former sea captain, agrees to take command of a small cargo ship abandoned by its crew and quarantined following a yellow fever epidemic. The ship contains a cargo of champagne to be delivered to Sydney, Australia. Despite their vows of temperance, the captain and his first mate succumb to the temptation to drink. The ship is caught in a storm, and it is only by a miracle that the crew survives, running out of food and water.

Based on an obscure RL Stevenson novel ,("the ebb-tide") the only movie directed by screenwriter Paul Gégauff , who often worked with Claude Chabrol,for better ("que la bête meure" 1969) or worse ("les magiciens " 1975) In fact ,it is reportedly said that Gégauff was drunk all the time and that Jacques Poitrenaud made most of the movie .

An offbeat adventure yarn , sometimes interesting even though Franco Fabrizzi and Serge Marquand are often left to their own devices ;director Roger Vadim appears halfway through the movie .

It's the story of a doomed boat (her former crew died of yellow fever) and of a doomed threesome ; the scene of the erstwhile captain's clothes might have cast a maleficent cast on the boat and her freight , cases of champagne (and it's "Moet et Chandon ,one of the finest !); the vague desire of being a captain by Fabrizzi quickly sinks into a pool of wine, a bacchanalian ; reversing the marriage feast at Cana,most of the bottles are filled with aqua simplex.

The meeting with the ambiguous pearl merchant ,all dressed in white in a symbolic wreck ,will lead these not-beautiful losers to their last temptation.
