This film tells the story of a Russian Red Army Commander who attempts to thwart the opium smuggling in 1920s Kyrgyzstan. He is supported by some of the locals who have knowledge of the smuggling routes.

While the sort is relatively straightforward, this is a complex film. The aesthetic is superficially that of a western, and some tropes of that genre are present, but the film spends much more time exploring the lifestyle and culture of the native Kyrgyz people, with long interludes of songs and cultural practices. This is remarkable given the film was made during an era where the unification of the Soviet people was being promoted and nationalist uprisings put down. That such a sensitive, almost ethnographic film, was made by a state sponsored studio and passed state censorship controls, is surprising.

This is film worth seeing on many levels. Certainly unique and well produced (the cinematography is excellent), there is much to enjoy here.

The characters of these stories are involved in daring and often dangerous situations, requiring them to rely on their physical prowess, skills, and quick thinking to overcome challenges and adversaries.

Dramas delve into the complexities of human life, often exploring themes of love, loss, morality, societal issues, personal growth, with the aim to evoke an emotional response from the audience by presenting relatable and thought-provoking stories.
