A Comedy of Money, Habit and Human Nature

Änkeman Jarl belongs to a kind of Swedish countryside drama that I love almost instinctively. I recognise the same humane attention in the older Astrid Lindgren adaptations, in Raskens, in Per Sjöstrand's other work and, through considerably darker material, in productions such as Skånska mord. The rooms are inhabited, the clothing belongs to the people wearing it, the land has practical value, and the humour grows from familiarity: neighbours know one another's habits, relatives understand where money is kept, and every polite inquiry carries years of accumulated knowledge.

Per Sjöstrand's 1971 television film runs for almost two hours and adapts Vilhelm Moberg's folkkomedi, first published and premiered at Dramaten in 1940. Olof Bergström plays Andreas Jarl, an elderly widower and retired corporal whose plan to marry his neighbour Gustava Hägg, played by Berta Hall, causes considerable agitation in their Småland village. Tore Lindwall appears as Mandus, while Marianne Stjernqvist, Lena-Pia Bernhardsson, Mathias Henrikson, John Harryson and several other familiar Swedish actors complete an unusually convincing ensemble. Sjöstrand later wrote and directed the celebrated 1976 television adaptation of Moberg's Raskens, and many of the qualities associated with that production are already present here.

Andreas and Gustava arrive at the possibility of marriage through loneliness, affection and domestic economy. Each maintains a separate house, stove, lamp and supply of food; living together ought to cost less, and dividing everything equally initially seems reasonable. Their plan soon encounters the accumulated habits of two people who have reached old age without expecting to reorganise their daily lives for anyone else. Possessions have histories, former spouses remain present in memory, and every apparently simple question about money carries an opinion about fairness, competence and personal authority.

Olof Bergström gives Andreas an excellent mixture of pride, thrift, grief and comic self-importance. He can inspire sympathy while behaving quite intolerably during the same conversation, and the performance never converts him into a harmless old eccentric. Andreas has survived long enough to trust his own judgement completely, even when that judgement becomes ridiculous. Berta Hall gives Gustava equal firmness; she has her own standards, her own property and no intention of entering marriage as an obedient solution to another person's loneliness. Their courtship is funny because both are grieving and sincerely drawn to companionship, while sincerity does nothing to remove vanity, suspicion or the desire to retain control.

Tore Lindwall's Mandus adds another kind of familiarity. He knows Andreas well enough to provoke him with little effort, and their rivalry has the ease of a conflict practised over many years. Much of that history is conveyed visually through posture, timing and small alterations of expression, which speaks for the quality of both performances. The same precision extends throughout the village. A suspicious glance, a question about the house or a sudden concern for an elderly parent's welfare may contain more comedy than an elaborate joke, because the actors understand everything their characters are attempting to conceal.

Moberg's language is among the film's greatest pleasures. Resentment presents itself as fairness, greed adopts the language of responsibility, and anxiety about losing a parent becomes anxiety about who may inherit the cottage. The dialogue possesses the rhythm and indirectness of people accustomed to expressing private feeling through practical matters. It never sounds like contemporary Swedish dressed in old clothing. Class, age, regional belonging and personal pride remain audible in the choice of words.

That linguistic exactness is one reason the film belongs so comfortably beside Raskens and the finest older Swedish rural productions. Dialect and period speech are allowed to shape thought instead of merely decorating a generic screenplay. The people reason through the terms available within their own social world, and the actors speak as though they learned these expressions from parents, neighbours and years of ordinary conversation.

The adult children's interest in Andreas's remarriage is painfully credible. Their concern for him may contain genuine affection, yet it remains inseparable from the possibility that Gustava could alter an inheritance they have already begun to imagine as their own. This is hardly an antiquated fantasy about corrupt younger generations. Families still separate permanently over houses, land, furniture, savings and promises made decades earlier, and the property involved need not be impressive. A modest cottage can revive sibling rivalry, perceived favouritism and old disputes over who helped the parents most.

I have encountered this behaviour in my own family and in more families around me than I could easily count. People who regard themselves as loving and generous can become astonishingly calculating once a parent's possessions begin to look like future property. Moberg recognises that tendency and distributes it without regard for age. Andreas and Gustava also calculate, bargain and defend their interests; Mandus carries his own pride, and the children interpret events according to what they may gain or lose.

Reducing the film to a conservative warning about younger generations would mistake observation for ideological instruction. The younger characters possess private interests and sometimes behave selfishly, just as Andreas, Gustava and Mandus calculate, bargain and protect their own positions. Their conduct feels credible precisely because youth is granted no automatic innocence. A version in which the children remained industrious, selfless and wholly indifferent to inheritance would impose a much more conventional moral order, assigning virtue and vice according to generation.

Interpreting the story entirely through contemporary political categories would also obscure the society from which it emerged. Moberg wrote about a rural Sweden still deeply shaped by Lutheran and pietist traditions, where thrift, duty, reputation, courtship, marriage and household economy belonged to the accepted moral structure of daily life. The characters judge one another through assumptions inherited from that environment. Treating every such assumption as a political declaration reduces a historically specific world to a modern ideological argument.

Moberg grants none of his characters moral purity. Age brings experience together with stubbornness; youth brings energy together with entitlement; loneliness can encourage tenderness while increasing fear of financial loss. These qualities remain compatible within the same person, and nobody must become exemplary before receiving understanding.

The central relationship also feels realistic for reasons extending beyond money. Andreas and Gustava attempt to unite two households while retaining control over everything that previously belonged to them. Their idea of equality depends upon exact measurement, yet shared life continually creates questions that cannot be settled by dividing expenses in half. Each has spent decades developing particular standards, routines and expectations, and neither possesses much willingness to adjust to the daily behaviour of another person.

I have seen this happen repeatedly among older people attempting new relationships after divorce or widowhood. After many years of living alone, or after a long marriage in which household habits became deeply established, some find themselves unable to tolerate another person's routines, preferences, disorder, economy or manner of organising daily life. Relationships then fail over matters that may appear trivial from outside, and the people involved eventually conclude that they are more content alone.

Andreas and Gustava therefore seem entirely credible to me. Their difficulties arise from their personalities, accumulated habits and limited capacity for accommodation. Another couple might have succeeded, and these two might have succeeded had either been more prepared to alter the life already built around them. The film offers no general argument against remarriage; it observes how companionship can become harder to sustain when two people have grown accustomed to complete authority within their separate homes.

The production's visual modesty suits Moberg's material. Houses, yards, roads and interiors receive enough attention to establish how people live, without turning rural Sweden into a decorative exhibition. A house matters because it must be heated, maintained and eventually inherited. Food requires labour, distance affects visits, and neighbours see who enters and leaves. The village is attractive at times, although its beauty never interrupts its practical function.

This is the Sweden I recognise from many television and film productions made during the latter half of the twentieth century, when rural life could be presented with humour and warmth while retaining labour, discomfort, provincial suspicion and material limitation. The countryside was populated by complete adults instead of quaint figures assembled for urban amusement. Their lives could be ridiculous without becoming contemptible.

I loved the film for the same reason I return to Raskens, older Astrid Lindgren adaptations and so many Swedish productions from this period. Its warmth depends upon the actors' attention to human behaviour; its historical atmosphere grows from language, work, property and social custom. Per Sjöstrand preserves Moberg's understanding that affection can coexist with self-interest, and that people may behave selfishly without forfeiting their dignity.

Swedish cinema is renowned for psychological depth, austere beauty, and philosophical inquiry. It often focuses on existential questions and societal critique, marked by a stark visual approach. In contemporary times, it has also developed a sharp satirical edge in examining social issues.
