A great pornographer Alex de Renzy ended his career making hundreds of garbage anal-sex videos under the name Rex Borsky (this sad end mirrors that of Joe Sarno in the previous decade using several dozen pseudonyms as he shot an endless stream of hardcore quickies). His final "real movie" was "Virgin Dreams" in 1996, while this 1993 "Slave to Love" was his penultimate attempt to expand the horizons of erotic cinema.

It's not completely successful, but is in the serious tone he maintains, similar to the best work of his more famous contemporary, Gerard Damiano. Maintaining that seriousness is the casting of Jamie Gillis as a philosophical priest who hears the confession of the movie's stat Sierra, and also provides voiceover commentary.

It's not unlike the "Story of O", that literary erotic landmark that also influenced Damiano. Sierra is an ordinary young woman who operates a barber shop with pal Brittany O'Connell, but is exposed to a wider world view when she encounters wealthy sybarite Randy Spears. He rides up on his horse in a park where the two girls are relaxing and picks up Sierra.

She's given to being submissive, and after sex with Randy and a similarly decadent Euro girl Beatrice Valle, she lets Randy share her with a large number of like-minded folks, with public orgies and freewheeling sex. She confesses her sins (experiences with Randy) to local priest Jamie Gillis, with unexpected consequences for him. Ultimately, she moves on, dropping Randy to grow in experience on her own.

This is well-performed by a large cast, with a quite different approach to such erotic content chosen by De Renzy. Instead of lengthy sex scenes, he pares down the XXX content to concise, heavily edited scenes amounting to over a dozen such sequences in a movie only 74 minutes long!

Result seems quite fragmentary -not difficult to follow, but not adhering to the porn formula in recent years of longer and longer sex scenes. Even de Renzy's orgies here are brief. It's an approach that is so different from what eroticism has become that the novelty of its structure is fascinating beyond the actual movie's narrative itself.
