Ben Elton considered this as essentially the third series of Ben Elton: The Man from Auntie (1990).

In his 2025 autobiography "What Have I Done?", he wrote: "It was basically another series of The Man From Auntie, but since Geoff Perkins couldn't do it, we changed the name to The Ben Elton Show. It was a boring name but I liked it because it reminded me of my love of '70s light entertainment. They used to call the shows after the stars in those days and I loved the idea of being part of a BBC1 light entertainment tradition."
