This film has not been forgotten and it was brought out on DVD in France and perhaps can still be found. It is coupled with the director's invaluable other documentaries, and her other major film, ' Paris 1900. ' The director's name Nicole Vedres, and it is a total shame that her work is not available in the UK or to my knowledge the USA. It was the first film to get an X certificate in the UK in 1951 and frankly I cannot see why. As for the film itself it is as fantastic as it is real; an ordinary man taken up into the clouds by a helicopter and from there lifted into meetings with many notable people of the time. Those include Jean-Paul Sartre and the existentialist Left Bank of Paris at that time. Andre Gide's presence is for me extraordinary in itself. As for the scientific aspects cloning may have upset the UK censors. To sum up the film is about a way of living in the future, and the fears and hopes that will come with it. 1949 when it was a made new ways and dark ways are contemplated, and it is my belief that in this year 2026 it can remind us of what the world will become, showing us that with intelligence and true knowledge we may well say life begins tomorrow. Essential viewing.
