A landmark film that's still fun to watch

Thirty years ago a new age dawned when computers became sufficiently powerful to render an entire feature film (in less than a human lifetime at least). Now Toy Story is commonly seen as the first fully computer animated film but apparently physical models were used during the process - while Cassiopeia was created digitally from start to finish which is the key test.

Beyond this though is director Clóvis Vieira's film any good? Well yes it is although with some caveats. It's not a complicated story for a start. There's a villainous ship commander called Shadowseat who's sucking all of the life-force from the planet Atenéia and a small team of heroes are trying to halt his evil plans. The dialogue is fun and the voice acting surprisingly entertaining if cartoonish.

More than that the graphics are something else. Obviously the rendering is basic but the creativity on offer is truly impressive; how the small team of artists working on this project managed to design such impressive spaceships and alien figures with their limited resources boggles the mind. Truly the hard technical limitations imposed pushed them above and beyond to deliver on their vision.

What's also impressive is that Cassiopeia doesn't look dated like, say, The Lawnmower Man. Instead it feels like a piece of work made in another dimension and in a way that's the relationship of Brazil to Hollywood? The concerns and influences of these industries are entirely different which leads to very different output but equally maybe that's why Cassiopeia has been so cruelly overlooked? That's a real shame.
