Stuart Hall invades the precincts of the theater during the first week of rehearsal to pitch his song about fairies. He's thrown out on his ear, but when a performer can't read his lines, he's hired to take his place. Quickly falling in mutual love with chorine Polly Ward, he writes a love song which is accepted and his performance of it becomes the hit of the show. But with success comes Trilby Clark, and Miss Ward wonders if she's still loved.

It's not a particularly prepossessing movie musical, and the songs range from awful to okay. What sets this one apart is that it's not only a musical, it's in Pathecolor, even if the elements look like they've shrunk at different rates. Persistent Internet rumor has it that Hitchcock did uncredited work, but that's the sort of thing that follows him around everywhere; any successful Film from British International has the result of people attaching his name to it. Director Thomas Bentley directed enough good films that this mediocre one is well within his abilities; in fact, movies like this doubtless contributed to the poorer nature of his later projects. At the moment, though, he was clearly held in esteem by his bosses. If you wish to attach storied names to this movie, Theodor Sparkuhl was the Director of Photography, and Jack Cardiff was an uncredited Assistant cameraman. If you like, you can try to spot Bill Shine in a small role. I didn't bother.
