A great documentary on the fighter pilot turned director

This fine 1995 documentary about Wellman is also available as one of the bonus features on "Forbidden Hollywood Collection Volume Three," a wonderful but sadly DVD-only four-disc set of six tough Wellman-directed Pre-code dramas dealing with Depression life (five Warner Brothers titles and one MGM production), which Warner Home Video released back in 2009.

Created, co-produced, and co-written by his son William Wellman, Jr., WILD BILL: HOLLYWOOD MAVERICK chronicles Wellman's personal life, including his service and injuries as a fighter pilot during World War I, as well as his impressive film career and battles with studio producers. Numerous interviews of stars who worked with him are interspersed with film clips, tied together with narration by Alec Baldwin. It's probably best viewed after watching Wellman's major films rather than before, as some of the excerpts do give away major plot points of the films, but all arouse viewer interest in seeing the complete works. The documentary stresses how Wellman sometimes literally fought to achieve his vision, yet managed to compromise enough to work effectively within the Hollywood system for more than three decades, often while undermining its rigid rules.
