- TriviaProduction began under the working title "Johnny Utah" following the casting of Keanu Reeves. The studio later changed the title to "Riders on the Storm" after the song by The Doors during the period Patrick Swayze joined the cast. Producers eventually rejected both titles due to a lack of perceived relevance to surfing and the lyrical content of the song. The final title, "Point Break," was selected approximately halfway through principal photography. It describes a type of wave that breaks as it hits a point of land or a rock protrusion extending from the coastline, creating a long, consistent, and predictable ride favored by surfers.
- GoofsWhile Utah is at the FBI looking up Tyler's criminal record, one of the first entries on the computer is "Excessive Speed," which Utah (or Keanu Reeves) reads incorrectly as "Exhibition of Speed."
- Alternate versionsThe 15-rated UK cinema version was trimmed by 25 secs to obtain the lower rating by the BBFC. There were five cuts to remove bullet impacts, cuts to shots of a naked woman being fired at during the house raid and several cuts to remove aggressive strong language. The cuts were restored the following year when the distributors opted for an 18 certificate for the video release. This same cut was resubmitted in 2011 and received a 15 certificate.
