Harvey Weinstein lied to the press by stating that a "director's cut" of the film would be released for video rentals. Director Lizzie Borden and the then-Miramax chairman had clashed for the entirety of filming and post-production, and Borden told an interviewer that Weinstein stated the "director's cut" fiction to get revenge on her when she refused his editing diktats. She wanted to do such a cut but didn't have the contractual right to it, and Weinstein taunted her with this when the movie was a major critical and commercial failure.

In the shots before and during Dana's attack on David with the knife, the fish blood on her face disappears and reappears.

Video release restores several minutes of explicit footage deleted from the original theatrical version.
