A rapist is threatening women in the local area, but late-night DJ Clarence Flamer delights in the story. One night he is contacted by Helen Baldwin, who wants to talk about her husband's anger. She explains that his volatile state stems from a recent work deal.

It is very much of the same vibe as Screen Two; that kind of late-night, slightly edgy drama. It is definitely of its time, though the attitudes towards women's safety are dubious to say the least. The idea that a DJ could be so robust and revolting just to get viewers has a definite 1990s vibe, as does the apparent lack of any Data Protection Act concerns during the era.

It is so interesting to have two actors playing the villains who are both now known as legendary TV detectives. Neil Dudgeon and Kevin Whately are excellent in their respective parts; if you have ever seen Trip Trap, you will know exactly how good a villain Whately can make. Alexei Sayle is also strong as the obnoxious DJ, motivated purely by ratings regardless of the impact his work has.

While it is well-acted and atmospheric, the piece perhaps lacks a bit of focus. The business deal subplot is a bit wishy-washy, and the attacker thread is simply more interesting.
