      The film has autobiographical elements. When Hayao Miyazaki and his brothers were young, their mother endured nine years of spinal tuberculosis and spent much time in hospitals. Although not explicitly shown, it is suggested that Satsuki and Mei's mother also had tuberculosis, as she was hospitalized in a sanatorium, leading the family to move to the countryside. He mentioned that it would have been too painful for him to create the film if the main characters had been boys instead of girls.
    • Goofs
      (at around 1h 7 mins) When Mei is walking around with corn, a goat walks up and bears its large teeth. The goat shows a full set of upper and lower teeth. This is a mistake as goats do not have upper teeth.

      • Tatsuo Kusakabe: Trees and people used to be good friends. I saw that tree and decided to buy the house. Hope Mom likes it too. Okay, let's pay our respects then get home for lunch.

      Drawings in the closing credits show the mother returning home in a taxi and having a bath with Satsuki and Mei. There is also the appearance of a baby dressed in blue, perhaps a younger sibling (brother?) for the girls.
