Solid foundations and strong action outshine rough edges

One should not be so hasty as to dismiss out of hand any feature that does not meet the standard of production values that one is accustomed to. Direction, editing, cinematography, and in turn acting may reflect amateur, undeveloped, or developing skill, and image and/or sound quality may be less than pristine, but these certainly don't mean that a given work is specifically bad. Surely it's more important that the writing is sure-footed, ably telling a story even through roughness in other aspects - and even then, so long as a title reflects earnest effort and care, it can survive the burdens of variable writing, harsh audio and visual quality, brusque and coarse editing, sometimes weak direction or cinematography, or variable acting. 'Ondanondu Kaladalli' does indeed suffer from these issues at different points and to different degrees, such that while the plot boasts firm foundations, troubled scene writing and seemingly harried execution makes the viewing experience a bit of a labored commitment, almost coming off as insincere at times.

Thankfully, however, the strength this picture has to claim well outweighs its faults, and it's engaging, enjoyable, and satisfying much more than it is not. The story really is compelling as a mercenary enters a land rife with familial and political conflict and finds himself neck-deep in that strife; one recognizes unmistakable influence from or at least parity with classic jidaigeki (the works of Kurosawa Akira, Inagaki Hiroshi, or Kobayashi Masaki, for example), and spaghetti westerns, not to mention Hong Kong kung fu flicks. While some of the scene writing shows clear rough edges, the ideas are definitely there and are quite firm, and other instances benefited from more careful consideration. The same surely goes for Girish Karnad's direction, and Apurba Kishore Bir's cinematography, as many sequences really are done very well, and action scenes are probably the strongest of all. Despite weak points the acting is capable more than not, and among others, Shankar Nag and Sunder Krishna Urs serve as solid anchors for the proceedings in the performances they give.

In some cases more than others one can plainly see the limitations of what Karnad was working with. The filming locations are terrific, but the production design seems bare-bones, for example; while some stunts and effects like one-on-one combat come off great - the fight choreography is easily a top highlight over the course of over two hours, even if the shooting of them could have been improved upon - some instances that tend more toward tricks of the camera or editing are more crude. No matter what critiques we may lay at the movie's feet, though, it holds up much more than it doesn't, and I also think it's fair to say that it finds its footing more as the minutes tick by, culminating in the extended action-filled climax that seems to have received the lion's share of the budget and the contributors' skill. Through it all, I believe the worst we might say of the whole affair is a level of writing and film-making on par with the early efforts of icons like Stanley Kubrick, or amateur film-making. And I do not say that with derogatory intent; I've seen amateur films that have blown big-budget studio fare out of the water. In whatever measure 'Ondanondu Kaladalli' butts up against a ceiling of limitations, overall it makes the most of what it has, and at its best it rather impresses.

It's not so grand as to demand viewership, yet for all its perceived flaws, I step away very much liking it, and I think anyone with an appreciation for all the wide variety that the medium has to offer. With a fine story anchoring generally commendable work from the cast and crew, and topped off with some fantastic action, when all is said and done 'Ondanondu Kaladalli' holds up well, and I'm happy to give it my hearty recommendation.
