The original Broadway play of the same title upon which this film is based starred Maureen Stapleton and Lou Jacobi. It opened at the Lyceum Theater, 149 W. 45th St., on February 19, 1970 and ran for only 12 performances. The play featured a Jewish family and was set in New York City. This was changed to a black family in Los Angeles for the film.

Goofs
During the opening interaction with the male salesperson at the bookstore, a countertop display of a book by author/performer Steve Allen (whose wife Jayne Meadows appears in a major supporting role) keeps flip-flopping so the cover in the front of the book is always on view, whether it is being shot from the point of view of the customer or from that of behind the counter or the clerk.
