Camping couples run afoul demented ringmaster

Vince Edwards' directs (but does not appear in) another variation of 'The Most Dangerous Game' starring velvet baritone Richard Basehart as a former circus owner who pits his pair of bengal tigers against four city slickers on a camping trip in order to test their mettle, resilience and ingenuity.

The general theme was recycled again just a few years later with Donald Pleasence in 'Night Creature', and whilst Basehart is comparable to Pleasence in villainy, the rest of this small scale thriller doesn't reach its potential.

There's something fundamentally wrong with the execution when a movie concerning hungry tigers pursuing human prey can result in so little excitement. Even allowing for the logistical challenges, more interaction between tigers and humans was desperately needed. The characters never seem distressed enough at the prospect of having their throats torn out, barely breaking a sweat even as the big cats bear down upon them; I appreciate everyone responds differently to stressors, however some hysterics would be expected and the reactions here seem too composed and unrealistic.

Missed opportunities and plot holes aside, this modest telemovie thriller features an experienced cast and whilst it doesn't meet expectations, it's perhaps still solid enough to watch once.
