Teenage Sunaoko (Hiromi Kurita) travels from Tokyo to the island of Okinawa to search for her long lost possible half-brother Tsuruo (Shoji Ishibashi) in the company of her father's young fiancé Momoko (Lily). Complications ensue as Tsuruo has mistaken Momoko for Sunaoko. Released in 1972 director Nagisa Oshima's feature film (which he also co-wrote) is a comedy of sorts, being a kind of symbolic, allegorical satire on Japan's relationship with Okinawa, masquerading as a comical, complex family farce of mix-ups. Serious themes about the cultural destruction and environmental and social pollution and exploitation of Okinawa (by outsiders) poke through now and again, in a film which has attractive island locations, but really did need a stronger story and writing to make it work.
