Richard Crenna plays a perpetual loser who can't get his life together, burglarising homes to fund an unsustainable lifestyle but still harbouring hopes that he'll be reunited one day with his young son now in foster care.

'Thief' is a bleak peek into the world of addiction, its aiders and abetters, sympathisers and its victims of which self inflicted recidivist Crenna is patient A. Cameron Mitchell has a rare sympathetic role as Crenna's attorney and friend, Hurd Hatfield is the fencer who funds his illicit activities and Angie Dickinson provides a reason for him to change if he can resist temptation.

A change of pace for Crenna in a vulnerable role, director William A. Graham pulls the emotional strings gently never preaching too strongly, infusing enough action and suspense in a compact (71 mins), entertaining telemovie worth watching.
