I am thankful to Sweden's Klubb Super 8 for resurrecting many a forgotten or overlooked local porn movie. When they go further afield, as with the local lowbrow comedy BLONDIN PA SKOJARJAKT, they miss the boat.

This very tedious (running 81 minutes) effort spotlights Halvar Bjork, an actor I've seen in painlessly small doses in many quality films, ranging from Jan Troell's epic EMIGRANTS/THE NEW LAND to Bergman's AUTUMN SONATA and in drag (opposite Gunnar Bjornstrand in drag no less) in Vilgot Sjoman's TABU. But here he is styled as Scandinavia's answer to Norman Wisdom or Jerry Lewis, and his slapstick antics are tiresome in the extreme.

Bait & switch tactics (understandable at the time) have the film sold originally and now on the basis of the participation of TV star and beauty Margareta Sjodin. Not unlike porn packaging, she looks mighty alluring on the video box cover, but has almost nothing to do in a tiny role late in the film. Actual leading lady is the talented Monica Nordquist, putting up with Bjork in an attempted madcap tale of jewel thieves and folks chasing each other all across the countryside.

Dumb local comedies have their place: they used to put bums (using the Britishism version of the cliché) in seats filling local theaters in between more high-profile bookings. But this one has very little upside.

Swedish cinema is renowned for psychological depth, austere beauty, and philosophical inquiry. It often focuses on existential questions and societal critique, marked by a stark visual approach. In contemporary times, it has also developed a sharp satirical edge in examining social issues.
