Something For Kids To Sneak Into The Theater For

James Arena is a Mexican who comes to wealthy rancher James Mascolo for a job, then kidnaps Mascolo's downtrodden wife, Virginia Gordon.

It's filled with buxom young women with bikini tan lines and well-shaven arm pits when they are exposed -- which is frequently in this movie set in the 19th century. The acting is poor (particularly on the part of Miss Gordon; perhaps some compassion should be extended to her, given her "some of my best friends are Mexicans" lines after her abduction), the camerawork rather higgledy-piggledy in its compositions. On the plus side, the greens have survived particularly well in the Eastmancolor print I looked at. Over all, it looks like a 13-year-old's idea of sexual heat for 1968.

All of which has me scratching my head because the National Review proclaimed it one of the ten best movies of the year. I have never thought of the National Review as a source of such lists, but even at my age I am still astonished by what goes on. Doubtless this appealed to the raw, he-man mentality of the staff's torrid sexual predators when in their cups at Morey's. Try the fried clams, and boola-boola to you too.
