The final completed film of the Don Camillo series with Fernandel. Another one, "Don Camillo e i giovani d'oggi", began shooting in 1971, but Fernandel died before it could be completed.

Alternate versions
In an early (dubbed) version distributed in Spain, Don Camilo's joke about the possibility of General Franco shipping castanets to Brescello is replaced by that of the US President shipping a truck full of Coca Cola and popcorn. This was due to the censorship applied to movies in Spain during the Dictatorship (1936-75) The original reference to Franco was restored in a subsequent dubbed version.
