    • Trivia
One of the most remarkable aspects of Thunderbirds' legacy is its popularity among real-world scientists, engineers, and aerospace professionals—something that surprised even its creator, Gerry Anderson.

Anderson's fascination with aviation dated back to his childhood. His brother, Lionel Anderson, served as a pilot in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, helping to foster a lifelong interest in aircraft and aerospace technology. Years later Lew Grade, Anderson's financial backer and head of Incorporated Television Company (ITC), arranged for Gerry to visit the production facility at Feltham, England, where the revolutionary supersonic airliner Concorde was under construction.

Recalling the visit, Anderson admitted that he felt somewhat intimidated by the highly skilled engineers working on one of the most advanced aircraft ever built. He remembered hoping that nobody would ask about his own profession, believing that his work producing puppet television programmes would seem insignificant by comparison. When a design engineer eventually asked what he did for a living, Anderson initially replied only that he worked in the film industry before reluctantly admitting that he produced Thunderbirds.

The reaction astonished him. According to Anderson, the engineer immediately rushed upstairs and returned with a group of fellow designers, all eager to meet him. Rather than dismissing the programme as children's entertainment, the Concorde engineers enthusiastically discussed Thunderbirds for over an hour. Some even developed theories about how Thunderbird 2 might function if it were constructed in reality. Anderson later remarked that he had expected the engineers to laugh at his work, but instead found that many were devoted fans.

The connection between Thunderbirds and aerospace engineering became even more apparent when Concorde undertook its maiden flight to Toulouse, France. As the aircraft arrived for its public unveiling, it was reportedly greeted by the Band of the Royal Marines performing Barry Gray's famous Thunderbirds March, a symbolic tribute to the programme that had captured the imagination of so many aviation enthusiasts.

Stories such as these illustrate the unique relationship between Thunderbirds and the engineering community. While the series was designed as family entertainment, its imaginative yet practical-looking vehicles inspired countless viewers to pursue careers in aviation, aerospace engineering, science, and technology. For many professionals, Thunderbirds demonstrated that engineering was not merely about machines, but about using innovation and ingenuity to help people and solve seemingly impossible problems.
    • Goofs
The large digit "3" at the rear of Thunderbird 3 always reads left-to-right, regardless of whether the spaceship is flying towards the left or towards the right. It is assumed that 2 different models were used, since when the spaceship is rising vertically with 2 of the 3 sides visible, the "3" digit may appear in either orientation.

Correction: Instead of two different models, they might have the number "3" painted on both sides of the craft, just like airplanes have their id numbers painted on both sides of the fuselage. In fact, that's the more likely explanation since making additional models is more expensive than just painting one model.

      • Jeff Tracy: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! Thunderbirds are go!
    • Crazy credits
The opening credits include scenes from that week's episode. Gerry Anderson would later reuse this gimmick in Space: 1999 (1975) and Space Precinct (1994).
    • Alternate versions
When "Thunderbirds" reruns were broadcast on the Fox network in the early-1990s, new music and voices were used for some episodes, which upset a lot of long-time fans of the show.
