Paula Tessier: I wish you and I were falling in love again, that's all. We were so sure of the future then.

Philip Van der Besh: I've known lots of girls, but, it just doesn't last. Its my fault, I guess, but some how they're all so young.
Paula Tessier: What's wrong with that?
Philip Van der Besh: Oh, I don't know. It must be me. Still, now, take this last girl, she was pretty and exactly the way older people imagine the young to be.
Paula Tessier: How do older people imagine the young to be?
Philip Van der Besh: Oh, you know, they - they try to look wickedly decadent, they drive their little cars at top speed clinching their teeth, they like cigarettes, they moan, they open their eyes in the morning, and she kept telling me that love was no more than the touching of two skins.
Paula Tessier: And?
Philip Van der Besh: Well, I think love is more than that.

Paula Tessier: Its been a long time since anyones chased all over Paris looking for me.
Roger Demarest: And you like it, huh?
Paula Tessier: Yes! Of course, I do.

Philip Van der Besh: Have you ever seen a murder trial. Ah, its wonderful. Its so different in each country and always so exciting in its own way. In America its like a football game! Philip Van der Besh: Now, in France, it's different. The French have a logic and a sophistry and a true sense of drama. J'accuse! Sorry. I accuse. In the name of the dead, I accuse you of aborting your duty as a human being. I accuse you of letting love go by. Of neglecting your duty to be happy. Of living on evasion and subterfuge and resignation. You should be sentenced to death. You will be sentence to solitude.
Paula Tessier: A horrible sentence.
Philip Van der Besh: The worst. The worst and the most frightening. To be alone and without love. Isn't it?

Paula Tessier: You are a child. You must have been terribly spoiled when you were young.
Philip Van der Besh: Oh, yes. Mother gave me everything. Much easier than saying no.
Paula Tessier: What about your father?
Philip Van der Besh: Oh, we ditched him when I was seven. And from then on we traveled. Just Mother and I. Home is where the heart is.
Paula Tessier: And travel broadens the mind.
Philip Van der Besh: Oh, you're so very right. I have an amazing fund of useless information that serves me very well at dinner parties. I have thousands of acquaintances without the burden of friendship. I've been in and out of 27 schools and I can say "I love you' in 13 different languages.
Paula Tessier: Not bad at all. Well...
Philip Van der Besh: "Jeg elsker deg" - that's my favorite. It's "I love you" in Norwegian.
Paula Tessier: Did you learn that from a Norwegian girl?
Philip Van der Besh: Yes. "Jeg elsker deg" - its the extra syllable that gives it the emotion. Jeg elsker deg?
Paula Tessier: Well, here I am. Goodbye.

Paula Tessier: Oh, sometimes I wish I was one of those sluts you picked up in bars. Not to be trusted or esteemed or admired. Just to be loved!
