A gripping thriller with a more profound message behind it

I watched "Bridge of Destiny" mostly because of the main role of the actor Hannes Messemer, whom I remembered chiefly from his role as the commandant in the unforgettable "The Great Escape" from 1963. I liked "Bridge of Destiny" as a gripping thriller with a more profound message. The main character of the film, Klaus Urban, is a weak man by nature, but he wants to achieve success without stopping at anything, including crime. Klaus is a journalist, so the film touches a bit on media ethics, but the topic can be treated more generally, a bit like "The Talented Mr. Ripley". It is debatable whether the film is deep enough in its psychological layer, but in my opinion it works well as an engaging story that keeps the viewer in suspense. Apart from that, we have here a realistic, unvarnished image of reality that shows the influence of Italian neorealism. Some scenes also have something surreal, Kafkaesque, about them. These advantages, combined with strong acting, made "Bridge of Destiny" worth watching for me.
