Moonbird is the first independent animation to win an Oscar, likely due to its interesting and unusual visual style. I genuinely admire the aesthetic; I even found myself pausing several times to take in the intricate details on screen. The opening, in particular, feels like it could have inspired some of the dreamlike settings later seen in A Nightmare on Elm Street.

That said, the film has its downsides. First, the story isn't especially engaging. I understand what's happening, but it feels somewhat dull, even with the striking visuals. Second, the voice acting-particularly the young child's voice-can be grating. It's very prominent, and the crying and babbling typical of young children may come across as distracting rather than endearing. For me, that was probably the biggest drawback.
