Very different from how I remember most Seijun Suzuki movies feeling, though it's been a while since I watched stuff from him. This feels a bit less crazy stylistically, and there also aren't really any action or crime or thriller elements. It's a romantic melodrama about pining and forbidden love and long-distance relationships, I guess.

Love Letter gets a lot out of its setting, which played such a big role in keeping things decently interesting. I loved how this was short (at 40 minutes) but felt quite big and cinematic with how well it used wide-screen, which I often forget was still such a recent thing, back in the late 1950s.

The story is so-so, and the acting is what it needs to be. I was not riveted, but I liked quite a bit about Love Letter when it came to the way it looked. It wasn't a slap to the eyeballs the same way Seijun Suzuki's more explosive and action-filled thrillers do, but he still brought a decent amount to something more small-scale here (some good camerawork too, albeit used sparingly and not hugely show-offy). It's probably worth a watch if you have 40 minutes to spare and like the director.
