Patrick McGoohan had already appeared, with enormous (and unexpected) success, in a London stage production of Ibsen's little-performed play. Although he was immediately hailed by drama critics as the new successor to Laurence Olivier, he subsequently turned down the many stage offers that came his way, and did not appear in a stage play again for 28 years. He often spoke of wanting to make a film of "Brand", with himself directing as well as playing the lead, but never did.
