The Third Avenue Elevated Train opened in 1878. By 1920, it had been extended into the Bronx. The Manhattan portion of the line was shut down on May 12, 1955; parts of the Bronx train continued operating until 1973. Like the 2nd Avenue El, it was intended to be replaced by a subway line on 2nd Avenue; plans and money were raised in the 1920, at a cost of $99,000,000 and it did open from 72nd Street through 96th Street in 2017 at a cost of $4.45 billion . Plans to extend it to Harlem to the north and Hanover Square to the south will presumably proceed at the same breakneck pace and rigid adherence to budget.
