Soviet authorities, who felt insulted by the way the USSR is depicted in the story, protested against the release of the film in April 1951.

The French-language sequences in the film, largely involving scenes in the Pasture household during Fraziska's stay, were edited out of the American release prints, leaving only the principal English-language material.
