War correspondent Quentin Reynolds talks about the Community War Fund, which paid for the USO, and various good works in the United States and overseas while Joe is off fighting the War. It's clearly an appeal for people to donate, although it's never mentioned, which, as anyone will tell you, is the cleverest way to get people to reach into their pocket. It's their own idea, after all.

Reynolds (1902-1965) went from college football to professional footballer, then into news broadcasting. He's best remembered not for his more than 200 articles for Collier's magazine, nor his 25 books, but for his lawsuit against Westbrook Pegler. Pegler claimed that Reynolds had not actually been a war correspondent. Reynolds sued him and collected the then-record amount of more than $175,000, more than any other award in a libel suit.
