In the beginning of this film a young woman (Maya Deren herself) is lying on a beach and the ocean waves begin rolling backwards, maybe implying she's looking back at how she's come to be where she is in this world (or maybe it's just a lovely little visual device). She climbs or crawls through various situations, like the society dinner party where the smiling guests seem oblivious to her, the succession of men who walk by her side along a country road, and the home with covered furniture and a man lying down staring at her. It's an artistic film that can be interpreted in a lot of ways, something I liked about it, but it almost certainly seems to relate to her identity and her individuality. That last image of her running into the distance on the beach until she's a blur is brilliant.
