- Olivia Grayne: I don't believe you.
- Danny: You don't believe me, do you?
- Olivia Grayne: Your eyes are set quite wide apart... and your hands are quite good, but I really don't know what's wrong with you.
- Danny: Like me, do you?
- Olivia Grayne: No!
- Danny: Everybody else does.
- Inspector Belsize: [Seeing Olivia gazing out the window] Why, what's the matter? Have you just thought of something?
- Olivia Grayne: Oh, no, no.
- Inspector Belsize: You were looking strange as if you just thought of something.
- Olivia Grayne: Oh, no, it's nothing really. I was just thinking that...
- Inspector Belsize: What?
- Olivia Grayne: [pauses] Well, I often wonder on a very fine morning what it would be like for night to come... and I never can. I'd have to...
- [laughs]
- Olivia Grayne: Silly.
- Mrs. Bramson: Hunh, I should think it was!
- Inspector Belsize: No, go on.
- Olivia Grayne: Well, here we all are perfectly ordinary English people. We woke up this morning thinking, hmmm, here's another day. We got up, looked at the weather, talked... Here we all are still talking and... all the time...
- Inspector Belsize: What?
- Olivia Grayne: All the time there may be something lying in the woods, hidden under a bush... with two feet showing, perhaps a high heel catching the sunlight with a bird perched on the end of it, and the other, the other stockinged foot with blood that's dried on the stocking... and somewhere, somewhere there's a man walking about and talking just like us, and he got up in the morning, and he looked at the world... and he killed her.
- Inspector Belsize: Oh.
- Danny: I forgot it was Sunday. They're goin' to church down in the villages. All got up in their Sunday best. And the organ is playin' and the windows are shinin'. Shinin' on holy things because holy things isn't afraid of the daylight. But all the time, the daylight's movin' across the floor. And by the end of the sermon, the air in the church is turnin' gray and the people isn't able to think so much of holy things anymore but only of the terrible things that's goin' on outside. Because they know it's still still daylight and everything is ordinary and quiet and the day is the same as all the other days. And it'll come to an end. And it'll be night.
- Emily Terence, the Cook: You don't sound very repentent.
- Danny: Oh, but I am. What's done is done, isn't it, isn't it? That's my motto.
- Emily Terence, the Cook: [Olivia walks out] What does that mean?
- Danny: [laughs] She's a fine bit of ice for hot weather, isn't she?
- Guide: And now, ladies and gentlemen, if you will draw a little closer, you will see the exact spot where the body was recovered.
- Mrs. Bramson: [Danny has just put Mrs Bramson in her bed for a nap and is tickling her toes] You'll be the death of me. You really will.
- Danny: [Referring to Mrs. Branson] She's an invalid, isn't she?
- Emily Terence, the Cook: If she's an invalid, I'm Mickey Mouse.
- Olivia Grayne: Is my cigarette worrying you?
- Mrs. Bramson: Not at all!
- [Waving her hand before her face]
- Mrs. Bramson: I like it!
