Phillips attended the University of Southern California for screenwriting and acting, where he studied under Emmy award-winning writer Lance Gentile (ER) and screenwriter Jim Staahl (Beverly Hillbillies). His acting coaches at USC include Anne DeSalvo, and John DeMita. He continued on to Temple University in Philadelphia, where he earned his degree in film & television directing.
