- Dr. Mags Portman was a pioneer in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the United Kingdom; she advocated the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis medication (PrEP) to prevent new HIV/AIDS cases.
- In January 2017, she was diagnosed with mesothelioma which she suspected was a result of asbestos exposure from working in a hospital. She died of the illness just over two years later, on February 6, 2019 at the age of 44.
