Olavo de Carvalho, born in Campinas, State of São Paulo, was a Brazilian writer who presented himself as a philosopher and became one of the most controversial - intellectual figures of contemporary Brazilian conservatism. Largely self-taught and operating outside academic institutions, he built his reputation through books, journalism, online teaching, and public debate, defining his work in opposition to what he saw as Marxist dominance in culture, media, and universities, and emphasizing the primacy of individual conscience over collective ideological authority.

His writings combined elements of classical philosophy, religious and symbolic traditions, cultural criticism, and an aggressive, often caustic rhetorical style. Works such as The Garden of Afflictions, The Collective Imbecile, and The Minimum You Need to Know to Not Be an Idiot attracted a large and devoted readership while also provoking strong rejection from scholars and critics, who accused him of lacking formal philosophical training, misusing sources, promoting conspiracy-driven narratives, and spreading misinformation.

Based in the United States from 2005 onward, Olavo founded the Online Philosophy Course (Curso Online de Filosofia, COF), through which he reached thousands of students and consolidated his cultural and political influence. He became an important ideological reference for Brazil’s conservative movement and an informal intellectual influence during Jair Bolsonaro’s rise to power, though his confrontational style also led to repeated ruptures with former allies.

A central figure in Brazil’s political and cultural polarization during the 2010s and early 2020s, Olavo de Carvalho was regarded by supporters as an original thinker and fearless critic of the cultural establishment, and by detractors as a far-right ideologue hostile to academic standards and scientific consensus. His legacy remains deeply contested, reflecting broader tensions between philosophy, political activism, and polemical discourse in modern Brazil.

He died in Virginia on January 24, 2022 and is survived by his wife and 8 children.
