Olavo de Carvalho, born in Campinas, State of São Paulo, was a Brazilian writer who presented himself as a philosopher and became one of the most controversial - intellectual figures of contemporary Brazilian conservatism. Largely self-taught and operating outside academic institutions, he built his reputation through books, journalism, online teaching, and public debate, defining his work in opposition to what he saw as Marxist dominance in culture, media, and universities, and emphasizing the primacy of individual conscience over collective ideological authority.
His writings combined elements of classical philosophy, religious and symbolic traditions, cultural criticism, and an aggressive, often caustic rhetorical style. Works such as The Garden of Afflictions, The Collective Imbecile, and The Minimum You Need to Know to Not Be an Idiot attracted a large and devoted readership while also provoking strong rejection from scholars and critics, who accused him of lacking formal philosophical training, misusing sources, promoting conspiracy-driven narratives, and spreading misinformation.
