  • Jonkey Borthakur was an Indian singer and actress who works in Assamese and Hindi-languages film and songs. She was born on 30 September 1975 in Bombay, Maharashtra, India. Her father Mohini Mohan Borthakur was a magistrate and was also a writer and poet under the pen name Kopil Thakur. As a magistrate, her father was frequently transferred due to which Jonkey spent parts of his childhood moving with the family. Her mother Illy Borthakur was a singer and her brother Zubeen Garg was also a singer and actor. Her sister Palmee Borthakur is a assistant professor. Jonkey attended Karimganj High School and then Bijoy Bandhab High School. She passed her matriculation exam at Tamulpur High School in 1992. In the same year, she moved to Guwahati and studied higher secondary course at B. Borooah College. After that, she moved to Mumbai to pursue Bachelor of Arts at St. Xavier College after passed her HS (Class 12th) Final Exam in 1994, but dropped out to concentrate on her singing career. Jonkey released her first album titled 'Jonkie' in 1996. Then, she released her second album 'Mukti' in 1997 with her brother, which was Assamese's first siblings album and they drew inspirations from Nazia-Zoheb and Shaan-Sagarika. After that, she sang few songs spanned 4 years. Apart from singing, Jonkey acted her first film "Morom Nodir Gabhoru Ghaat" in 1999. She acted two films, 'Tumi Mur Mathu Mur' and 'Jibon Nadir Duti Paar'. She died on 12 January 2002 in a car accident.
