- He started writing and directing his own short films in high school, and received his first award as a sophomore for a one minute long short film called "The Detective" which he wrote, directed, and acted in. After which he began writing Infection, and Mirage. Neither of those premiered until two years later, when they both won awards at several film festivals.
- Originally he wanted to learn to create visual effects, but switched his focus to writing and directing his freshman year of high school after working with Jonathan Rouse, who was an upperclassman. McGarry began to work with Rouse whenever he was available and learned much that helped shape his own particular style of writing.
- In 2017 McGarry used a red lava lamp as a plot device in the film he wrote called "Homecoming". Since then, the lava lamp has appeared in almost all of his work at some point, and was used as a plot device again in "Promposal" which was created almost exactly one year after homecoming. This only stopped when McGarry moved to Atlanta to go to college, leaving the lava lamp in Sioux City.
